noun /hakˈsēətē/
1. That property or quality of a thing by virtue of which it is unique or describable as “this (one).”
2. The property of being a unique and individual thing
A term from medieval philosophy first coined by Duns Scotus which denotes the discrete qualities, properties or characteristics of a thing which make it a particular thing. Haecceity is a person or object’s “thisness”.
Haecceity Project is a collaborative exhibition based on the theme of “The Visual Image and Literature”. Following along with the meaning of the word “haecceity”, this exhibition will be a coherent body of work created by a group of individual artists in various mediums.
For the exhibition, we plan on creating a “Pop-up Gallery” – turning a previously unused space into our own gallery for a week. The location is, as of yet, undecided.
The theme “The Visual Image and Literature” mainly comes from a love that Jen and I share of literature and the arts. We’re not saying you have to work with a specific piece of writing (if you don’t want to), we’re more looking for the relationship that one has with the written word and the ways in which one reacts/interacts with it.
This project is open to all mediums – be it graphic, photographic, performance, etc. We want to see your representation of the theme. Remember – “haecceity” is the property of a being or thing that makes it unique.
Proposed exhibition date is: November 2011.
